A ductless mini split should give you heating and cooling from one quiet, efficient system. When it fails and starts leaking refrigerant, though, you usually end up with a unit that isn’t worth fixing and a house that’s cold in the winter and warm in the summer.
That was the situation at Brian H.’s home in Peabody. His Fujitsu mini split had broken down and was leaking refrigerant. He decided it wasn’t worth chasing more repairs on an old unit, so he called Pespisa. We pulled the failed system out and put in a new Mitsubishi hyper-heat mini split.
The Challenge
A broken, leaking system that couldn’t be trusted
Here’s what Brian was dealing with:
- The Fujitsu mini split had quit and wasn’t heating or cooling the way it should.
- It was leaking refrigerant, which is expensive to track down and usually means the equipment is near the end of its life.
- With just the one system in the home, its failure left no dependable heating or cooling.
Putting more money into an old, leaking unit rarely pays off. Brian wanted it replaced by someone who would size and install it correctly.
Our Solution
A new Mitsubishi hyper-heat mini split, installed to spec
We put a single-zone Mitsubishi hyper-heat system in place of the Fujitsu. It’s a cold-climate heat pump, so it keeps putting out heat on the coldest New England nights and cools efficiently through the summer:
Outdoor unit:
- Mitsubishi MUZ-GX18NLHZ2 hyper-heat condenser, mounted on an 18″ stand
- 22,000 BTU cooling / 27,000 BTU heating
- 25.6 SEER2 cooling efficiency, 10 HSPF2 heating efficiency
Indoor unit:
- Mitsubishi MSZ-GX18NL wall-mounted head, matched to the space
Installation details:
- New copper line sets, interconnect wiring, and slim-duct line-set covers for a clean exterior finish
- Nitrogen pressure test and triple evacuation before startup
- Charged with the correct line-set-length weight of R454B refrigerant
- Dedicated electrical wiring run from the disconnects to both the outdoor and indoor units
Controls: It runs on Mitsubishi’s own controls, so Brian gets steady, room-level temperature control from one reliable unit.
Why This Design Was the Right Fit
Once a mini split is failing and leaking refrigerant, replacing it almost always beats another repair. We went with a Mitsubishi hyper-heat system for a few reasons:
- Real heat in the cold. Hyper-heat keeps putting out usable heat well below freezing, so the house stays warm through a New England winter.
- Lower energy use. At 25.6 SEER2 and 10 HSPF2, it runs more efficiently than the old, leaking unit did.
- An install that lasts. Proper evacuation, a pressure test, and a measured refrigerant charge are what keep the new system from springing the same leaks.
